President Obama on Slavery
The Abolition Institute concurs with Anti-Slavery International’s policy recommendations below for the eradication slavery in Mauritania. These recommendations are also supported by the Society for Threatened Peoples and the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization.
Anti-Slavery International is the world’s oldest international human rights organization. It was founded in the 1700s by abolitionists in the British Parliament and is still working hard to fight modern day slavery in places like Mauritania.
Slavery was abolished in 1833 in large part because of the work of Anti-Slavery International.
The Abolition Institute concurs with Anti-Slavery International’s policy recommendations – supported by other critical groups as well - for the eradication slavery in Mauritania.
Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States and the nation’s first African-American President, visited Dakar Senegal on Thursday, June 27th 2013 to speak out against slavery. President Obama has been a lifelong opponent of modern day slavery and human trafficking, and counts legendary anti-slavery leaders from his home state of Illinois as his personal heroes.
